Kansas City Backyard Ultra : Mill Creek Park, Kansas City, MO
Kansas City Backyard Ultra is a multi-format running event held at Mill Creek Park on the Country Club Plaza with the start and finish area by the J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain. The event includes a Last Runner Standing format plus timed events in fixed-hour durations.
Event formats:
- Last Runner Standing
- 12 hour timed event
- 9 hour timed event
- 6 hour timed event
- 3 hour timed event
Course and format: Runners complete a single loop each hour until one runner remains for the Last Runner Standing event. A loop consists of four 1 mile laps on the Mill Creek Park Trail. The trail surface is described as mondo-like track surface to help runners stay on course.
Aid and support: There is a primary, abundantly stocked aid station available every mile loop with water, ice, an assortment of food, and an electrolyte drink. Race staff will provide whistle and countdown protocol before each loop and will enforce Backyard Ultra rules, including the one hour time limit per loop and the requirement to be in the start corral to begin the next loop.
Rules and logistics: Crew assistance on-course is not allowed; runners may have up to two crew. Runners may not return to the race headquarters once a loop has started. Artificial aids such as trekking poles are not permitted. Restrooms are available near the start and there is limited space near the start/finish for a small chair or pop-up site. Finishing mileage is recorded individually; final results show total miles completed rather than labeling most entrants as official finishers.
