Overview
The Holiday Luminary 5K is an annual running event held at the Overland Park Arboretum. It takes participants through a holiday light display before it opens to the public.
Distances
- Holiday Luminary 5K
- Holiday Luminary 1 Mile
Event Details
The event starts and finishes near the LongHouse Visitors Center. The 5K course begins on the paved luminary trail, moves onto less-traveled arboretum acreage including a paved road, and finishes back on the lit trail. The entire 1 Mile route is on the paved luminary trail sidewalks. Organizers note that sections of the 5K route will be dark and recommend using headlamps or flashlights for safety. Strollers are permitted, but those with strollers are asked to start at the back of their group.
The event features holiday-themed elements along the course, including music, carolers, and cookie aid stations. A post-race holiday party at the finish area includes music, dancing, and photo opportunities.
Registration & Fees
Registration for both distances opens on February 12, 2026. The entry fee provides participants with a long-sleeve event shirt (for those who register before November 17) and a light-up finisher medal. All attendees, including participants and spectators, must also pay a separate mandatory admission fee to the Overland Park Arboretum: $7 for adults, $3 for ages 6-17, and free for children 5 and under.
Awards
There is no formal awards ceremony. For the 5K only, first-place awards are given in multiple age groups. Random door prizes are also awarded. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
