Event Overview
The Holiday Luminary 5K is an annual evening running event held at the Overland Park Arboretum in Kansas. Participants get an early preview of the venue's holiday light display before it opens to the public. The event features two distances: a 5K and a 1-mile run.
Course Details
The course starts and finishes near the LongHouse Visitors Center. The 1-mile route runs completely on the paved sidewalks of the holiday luminary trail. The 5K route begins on the same trail, ventures onto the arboretum's less-traveled paved roads, and returns to finish on the illuminated luminary path. Sections of the 5K route will be dark; the use of headlamps or flashlights is recommended for safety.
Event Features
The event includes holiday-themed elements such as carolers, music, and cookies at aid stations along the course. At the finish, there is a holiday party atmosphere with a DJ playing music, photo opportunities, and treats. Strollers are allowed, though participants with them are asked to start at the back. Dogs are not permitted in the arboretum gardens.
Registration and Logistics
Registration includes a long-sleeve event shirt for those who sign up before the deadline (November 17) and a light-up finisher medal for all finishers. There is an additional mandatory admission fee for the arboretum for all attendees: $7 for adults, $3 for ages 6-17, and free for children 5 and under. Packet pickup is available the day before the event and on race day at the arboretum. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
