Kananaskis 100 Mile Relay
The Kananaskis 100 Mile Relay is a team relay covering 100 miles in southwestern Alberta. The course begins near Longview, follows highway 541 toward the Rocky Mountains, traverses the Highwood Pass on the highest paved highway in Canada, enters the Kananaskis Valley, and finishes in Kananaskis Village with legs nine and ten including cross-country sections to Nakiska.
The event is limited to 60 teams. Entry uses tiered pricing and is handled on a first come, first served basis. Only a team captain needs to register initially; full team roster registration occurs later in the spring. Registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable; participants may purchase cancellation insurance during registration.
Forced starts are used for slower teams to ensure completion within the event daylight window; teams with predicted overall times over 16 hours may be subject to simultaneous forced starts. Organizers require teams to finish within the daylight time window.
Parks now requires runners to carry bear spray from the start of leg 3 to the end of the race, with organizers recommending starting with it at leg 1. A single can may be passed between runners at relay stations, but runners involved in forced starts on leg 8 and/or 10 must have their own spray. Organizers provide sample race day plans and a race guide; teams should review the rules and logistics provided.
Included for entrants are the route over the highest paved road in the country, race morning coffee and snacks in Longview, a post-race meal at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge and an after party featuring Annex beer, preferred Pomeroy rates, and event t-shirts.
