Jarmans Invitational Marathon
The Jarmans Invitational Marathon is held in Crozet, Virginia on the first or sometimes second Saturday of August. The event is organized as a multi‑lap out and back on Jarman's Gap Road and Greenwood Road, starting at their intersection near Crozet.
The course is a repeated climb and descent. Each lap includes a 2.9 mile climb with about 1,522 ft of elevation gain, followed by the same descent. Runners repeat this lap five times for a total of 29.0 miles and roughly 7,610 ft of cumulative elevation gain and loss. The road surface is steep gravel with sections in shade and sections in sun. Summit features are minimal and include a muddy parking area and an End State Maintenance sign. The route may include loose dogs, discarded cans, and a rail crossing that could be active.
Weather in early August can include high heat, strong sun exposure, and possible afternoon thunderstorms; if dry, the road is likely to be dusty. Aid stations provide warm water and likely some food, with the possibility that the highest station may be unstaffed. There is no parking at the start; organizers plan a shuttle from the Greenwood Community Center about one mile away and parking is not available at Chiles Peach Orchard.
The event is a low cost fatass style race with a $10 fee to enable the waitlist feature and support facilities and prizes. Registration fills to a 65 runner limit on a first come, first served basis, with a small number of organizer selections and subsequent waitlist movement to fill openings. Organizers aim to keep the final field close to 70 runners. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
