Independence Triathlon
The Independence Triathlon takes place at Lake Nockamixon State Park near Quakertown on the outskirts of Allentown, Pennsylvania. The event offers both Olympic and Sprint triathlon distances and aquabike options, staged from the park and using the lake and surrounding roads.
Distances
- Olympic: 1.5K swim, 40K bike, 10K run
- Sprint: 750 m swim, 20K bike, 5K run
The swim is a rectangular course in Lake Nockamixon marked by yellow triangle buoys at the corners and round orange buoys every 75–100 meters for sighting. Water temperatures are typically in the low to mid 70s and the swim is expected to be wetsuit legal. Olympic athletes swim two 750 meter laps; Sprint athletes swim one lap.
The bike course is closed to traffic, well paved, and has rolling terrain with turnaround points at each end. Olympic athletes complete two loops for a roughly 24 mile ride with about 1,294.6 ft of climbing; Sprint athletes do one loop for about 12 miles with about 641.4 ft of climbing. The run follows the shoulder of Route 563, with rollers and intermittent lake views; Olympic athletes run two loops for 10K and Sprint athletes one loop for 5K. Aid stations appear approximately every mile offering Gatorade and ice water.
The race is USA Triathlon sanctioned. Registered athletes receive a technical race shirt, socks, a finisher medal, and post race food and drink. Parking and transition policies reflect the closed-bike-course format: athletes remain on site until the course is clear and bicycles are not released until the bike cutoff or when the last runner exits transition.
