Independence Freedom Day 5k and Down Hill Mile
The Independence Freedom Day event on July 4, 2026 is organized by Grayson County Parks and Recreation and Blue Devil Cross Country boosters in Independence, Virginia at 110 Blue Devil Drive. The program includes the following events:

- Down Hill Mile
- THE DOUBLE 5k and mile
The 5k course is rated medium to hard and includes several hills. The published route begins in the GCHS parking lot, proceeds onto Main Street, Nautilus Way and Powerhouse Road, follows a trail to the Grayson Recreation Pool, passes through the pool parking lot, then continues on County Park Lane and Industrial Park Lane before returning on the Main Street sidewalk to the school. The downhill mile begins on the sidewalk in front of Carter National Bank, continues straight to Grayson Industrial Park and finishes downhill; participants are shuttled back to GCHS afterward. The mile is scheduled to be run before the 5k and the course is described as slightly downhill.
Entry details note a 5k fee of $25, a downhill mile fee of $25, and a combined double entry fee of $30. Early bird registration may include a T shirt while supplies last; double entrants receive only one shirt if registered in the shirt window. A free kids fun run is listed.
