Independence Freedom Day 5k / Down Hill Mile, Independence VA
The Independence Freedom Day 5k and Down Hill Mile take place on July 4, 2025, in Independence, Virginia. The event is organized by Grayson County Parks and Recreation together with Blue Devil Cross Country boosters and is the 11th annual running of the 5k.
Events include:
- 5k course with varied terrain
- Down Hill Mile on a predominantly downhill route
- THE DOUBLE entry for both races
The 5k course begins in the GCHS parking lot, turns right onto Main Street, left onto Nautilus Way, then right onto Powerhouse Road. Runners stay straight to enter a trail leading to the Grayson Recreation Pool, pass through the pool parking lot, turn right onto County Park Lane, take the first right into the lower field parking area, follow cones to Industrial Park Lane, turn right onto the sidewalk on Main Street, and return to the school. The 5k is rated medium to hard with some hills.
The Down Hill Mile starts on the sidewalk in front of Carter National Bank on Main Street, continues straight along the sidewalk to Grayson Industrial Park, and finishes there. This mile course is described as entirely downhill; participants are shuttled back to GCHS after the finish. The mile is run before the 5k.
Registration fees listed are $25 for the 5k or the Down Hill Mile and $30 for both. T-shirts were available with early bird registration but are sold out. Awards include winner plaques for male and female winners and finisher medals. A free kids fun run is also offered. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
