Independence Freedom Day 5k / Down Hill Mile
Grayson County Parks and Recreation and Blue Devil Cross Country boosters present the 11th annual Independence Freedom Day event on July 4, 2025 in Independence, Virginia at 110 Blue Devil Drive. The event program includes a standalone downhill mile, a 5k, and a combined double entry.

The 5k course is rated medium to hard and includes some hills. The 5k route begins in the GCHS parking lot, continues along Main Street and Nautilus Way, proceeds on Powerhouse Road, enters a trail leading to the Grayson Recreation Pool, passes through the pool parking lot, turns onto County Park Lane and follows cones to Industrial Park Lane before returning on Main Street to the school.
The downhill mile starts on the sidewalk in front of Carter National Bank on Main Street, runs straight to Grayson Industrial Park and is described as entirely downhill. Runners in the mile are shuttled back to GCHS after finishing.
Entries were offered with t-shirt availability during early bird registration and t-shirts are now listed as sold out. Entry fees listed are $25 for the 5k or the downhill mile, and $30 for both events. Awards include male and female winner plaques and finisher medals. A free kids fun run is also included.
