Independence Freedom Day 5k and Down Hill Mile
The event on July 4 in Independence, Virginia, is organized by Grayson County Parks and Recreation and Blue Devil Cross Country boosters. It includes three main race options and a free kids fun run.

- THE DOUBLE 5K and mile
The 5K course is rated medium to hard with some hills and follows a route that begins in the high school parking lot, then turns right onto Main Street, left onto Nautilus Way, right onto Powerhouse Road, enters a trail to the Grayson Recreation Pool, passes through the pool parking lot, turns right onto County Park Lane, then into the lower field parking area and returns via Industrial Park Lane and the Main Street sidewalk back to the school. The Down Hill Mile starts on the Main Street sidewalk in front of Carter National Bank, runs mostly downhill to Grayson Industrial Park, and is followed by a shuttle back to the high school.
Entry information lists fees of $25 for the Down Hill Mile, $25 for the 5K, and $30 for the Double. Early bird registration may include a T shirt while supplies last; Double entries receive one T shirt if registered in the shirt window. Awards include winner plaques for male and female overall and finisher medals; there are no age group awards. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
