Independence Day Festival - Hazleton
The Independence Day Festival in Hazleton features a variety of athletic events centered at Louis Schiavo City View Park. The physical course for the main races follows an out-and-back route that connects the Arthur Gardner Highway to the Hazleton Rails to Trails. Participants can choose from several distances and formats:
- 10K Run
- 5K Run/Walk (3.1 miles)
- 1 Mile Youth Race
- 1 Mile Family Walk
- Virtual Race Option (10K/5K/1M)
The 1 Mile Youth Race is held entirely within the park and consists of two loops. This specific event is restricted to participants aged 16 and younger. For the 5K and 10K races, the event uses chip timing for age group awards, while overall awards are determined by gun time. Awards are provided for the top overall male and female finishers in the 5K and 10K, as well as for first-place finishers in various age categories: 19 and under, 20-39, 40-59, and 60 and over.
For those unable to attend in person, a virtual race option is available for all distances. Virtual participants can complete their chosen distance on their own course between July 3 and July 5 and submit their times electronically for scoring in a separate division. All proceeds from the festival events are donated to organizations supporting the local autism community, youth sports, cancer research, and disabled veterans.
