25th Annual Idaho Springs Pack Burro Race
The Idaho Springs Pack Burro Race is an equestrian and running event featuring a single distance of 5 miles. Participants compete as a team consisting of one runner and one burro. This event is part of the Clear Creek Pack Burro Racing Series and is noted as a suitable distance for first-time participants.
The course begins at Citizens Park with a rolling start following a parade down Main Street. The route moves through the town of Idaho Springs before heading up Virginia Canyon on a dirt road with a 12% grade climb. Runners and their burros navigate a series of switchbacks, following white surveyor flags and race signage. The technical terrain includes Rose Gulch, where teams must navigate over logs and under trees, passing the Argo Mill before returning to the town center for a finish near the Elks Lodge.
Strict rules govern the competition to maintain the traditions of the sport:
- 5 miles
The burro must be equipped with a packsaddle containing a pick, gold pan, and shovel. The team must remain together throughout the race, and the runner manages the burro using a lead rope not exceeding 15 feet. While runners may lead or follow the animal, riding the burro is strictly prohibited. For those who do not own an animal, rental options are available through coordinated ranch services.
The event includes a specific cut-off time, requiring teams to reach the 3.3-mile mark by early afternoon to clear the trail for other users. Camping is available for participants and their burros at a nearby ranch from Friday through Monday. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
