Event Overview
The Georgetown Pack Burro Race is a unique running event held in Georgetown, Colorado. The event requires participants to race alongside a donkey, or burro, over a specific course. The team consists of one runner and one burro, who must remain together for the duration of the race.
Course & Location
The event uses a 6-mile course. The route goes from downtown Georgetown, around the east side of Georgetown Lake, and up the 1883 Saxon Mountain Trail. The start and finish are in downtown Georgetown.
Race Rules & Requirements
A key rule is that all participants must have a burro secured before registering. The burro must be outfitted with a packsaddle containing prospector's gear: a pick, gold pan, and shovel. The runner controls the burro via a single lead rope attached to its halter. Runners may push, pull, or carry the burro, but riding is not permitted. Teams must cross the finish line together, with the burro's nose crossing first to win. Several actions can lead to disqualification, including mistreating the burro, losing control, or missing required gear.
Additional Information
A camping option is available the night before the race at Shadows Ranch on Alvarado Road. The event provides a list of suggested supplies for runners, including water, food, gloves, and trail shoes. There is also extensive guidance for handling burros during the race, covering start positioning, control techniques, and safety. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
