About the race
HOWL Trail 2027 is a trail running event on 29 May 2027 that uses the final sections of the Heart of Wales Line route and finishes at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms, Shropshire. The event offers three measured courses that follow way-marked trail sections of the 141 mile Heart of Wales Line between Llanelli, Powys and Craven Arms.
Distances:
- 50 miles from Llandrindod Wells to Craven Arms
- 26 miles from Knucklas to Craven Arms
- 16 miles from Bucknell to Craven Arms
Each distance has a designated registration location near its start town and a baggage drop so participant baggage is transported to the finish at the Discovery Centre. Checkpoint arrangements differ by course: the 50 mile route has two manned checkpoints (at Llanbister Rd railway halt and Bucknell Primary School), the 26 mile route has one manned checkpoint at Bucknell, and the 16 mile route has no manned checkpoints between Bucknell and Craven Arms. Parking is available at the finish at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre and a £5 parking charge applies to support the centre. Age eligibility is set by course: HOWL50 and HOWL26 entrants must be between 18 and 98 years old, HOWL16 entrants between 17 and 98 years old; the overall event age minimum is 16.
