Hooded Horse Fell Race
The Hooded Horse Fell Race is a fell running event organized by Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers. The route is located entirely within Kilburn Wood in North Yorkshire and serves as a counter in the Dave Parry/Lets Run Winter Fell Race Series. The event is held under Fell Runner Association (FRA) rules.
The course covers a distance of 10.71 km with a total ascent of 390 m. It is classified as a BM race with a partially marked course (PM). Runners are required to have navigational skills (NS) as GPS navigation is not permitted for following the route. The terrain consists of forest environments featuring tree branches, roots, brambles, gorse, and mud. Portions of the route follow fire tracks, some of which may be obstructed by fallen trees.
Participants must be at least 18 years old. The race starts and finishes on the grass adjacent to the Kilburn Forest car park. All checkpoints on the course must be visited. Required safety equipment includes:
- 10.71 km distance
- Waterproof whole-body cover with taped seams and integrated hood
- Hat and gloves
- Map of the route and a compass
- Whistle and emergency food
Registration takes place at the Yorkshire Gliding Club prior to the start. Parking is available at the Kilburn Forest car park and the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre, though space is limited and charges apply. The event raises funds for Herriot Hospice Homecare, supporting families in Hambleton and Richmondshire. Dogs and bicycles are not permitted on the course.
