About the race
The Hooded Horse is a fell race organised by Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers. The event is run under Fell Runner Association rules and has been held for several years, previously organised by a local fitness group. The race raises money for Herriot Hospice Homecare.
The course is classified FRA category BM. The distance is 10.71 km with a climb of 390 m. The route is partially marked (PM), requires navigational skills (NS), and local knowledge is an advantage (LK). GPS navigation is not permitted. All checkpoints must be visited and there will be a pre race safety brief. The race starts and finishes on the grass adjacent to the car park.
The route runs mainly through woodland and fire tracks. Runners should expect tree branches and roots, brambles, nettles, gorse and mud; there can be fallen trees across tracks. The description includes a series of checkpoints through Kilburn Forest and Spruce Bank Wood, passing a small lake and a disused quarry on the way to the finish.
Runners must carry the FRA mandatory minimum kit: waterproof whole body cover with taped seams and an attached hood, hat, gloves, a map and compass, whistle and emergency food. Organisers may require specific items on the day and random kit checks are in operation. Dogs and bicycles are not permitted.
Practical details note parking charges at Kilburn Forest car park and at Sutton Bank Visitor Centre, toilet and cafe facilities at the gliding club and visitor centre, and an unsecure bag drop at the start finish.
