Herolds Bay Nature Reserve Meander
The event is a roughly 9 km walk in Herolds Bay Nature Reserve, based at Herolds Bay Café in the Western Cape. The route includes about 270 m of elevation and passes coastal cliffs, rocky headlands and ocean viewpoints. The advertised entry fee is R120 and the event lists a typical participant age of 12 years and older.
The reserve contains a variety of habitats, including critically endangered Garden Route Granite Fynbos, endangered dune strandveld, wetlands, valleys and pockets of indigenous milkwood forest. Recent alien-clearing work has restored over 100 hectares and shows recovering fynbos with proteas, ericas, restios and seasonal wildflowers. Birdlife is diverse, with more than 100 recorded species including woodpeckers, cormorants, sunbirds and raptors. Wildlife that may be seen includes bushbuck, African clawless otter, southern rock agama and Cape dwarf gecko. Elevated viewpoints offer opportunities to observe southern right whales and dolphins during the whale season.
Compulsory equipment listed for participants includes a suitable lightweight hydration pack or hip pouch, water, sunscreen, hat, suitable off-road non-slip shoes, snacks, a lightweight windproof jacket and basic emergency items such as bandages and blister plasters. Optional items mentioned are hiking poles, fingerless gloves, beanie, buffs and sunglasses. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
