Event Overview
The Hells Hills Trail Race takes place at Rocky Hill Ranch in Smithville, Texas. The course features a variety of terrain including single track trails, bridges, stream crossings, and sections through pine trees and seasonal wildflowers. While the route lacks long sustained climbs, it consists of frequent short, steep hills and rolling transitions.
Participants can choose from several distances:
- 50 mile (3 laps)
- 50 km (2 laps)
- 25 km (1 lap)
- 10 km (1 lap)
- 25 km Ruck
- 10 km Ruck
- Youth 1 mile (untimed)
Race Mechanics
The event utilizes chip timing with ankle straps. Runners are ranked based on "Gun Time" for official awards. Ruck divisions require participants to carry a weighted pack: 20 lbs for those under 150 lbs, and 30 lbs for those over 150 lbs. Pacers are permitted for the final lap of the 50 mile race and for the entire duration for runners aged 60 and older in the 50 km or 50 mile categories.
Logistical Details
This is a cupless event; participants must carry their own hydration vessels. Aid stations are situated every 2.8 to 4.5 miles, providing various food and drink options. Onsite amenities at Rocky Hill Ranch include camping, showers, and permanent restroom facilities.
