Headwaters Trail Runs

Headwaters Trail Runs comprises three trail races held in the Klamath Mountains west of Mount Shasta City, California. The events are named after the headwaters of the Sacramento River and use single-track trails, dirt forest roads, and established recreation trails.

  • 52K : mountainous loop on single-track and dirt forest roads, about 8,000 feet total gain.
  • 34K : loop course sharing sections of single-track and historic Sisson-Callahan National Recreation Trail, about 4,000 feet total gain.
  • 10K : Lake Siskiyou Trail around the forested shores of Lake Siskiyou, about 400 feet total gain.

The races take place with views of Mt. Shasta (14,179 feet) and Mt. Eddy (9,025 feet). Course support includes fully stocked aid stations. The event is cupless; participants must carry a means to drink at aid stations and reusable service ware is encouraged for the post race meal.

Registration fees cover race entry, a race t-shirt, a finisher's medal, and the post race meal. Awards are given to the top three overall male and female finishers and top three in each 10 year age group. The event is organized by volunteer staff under the Associated Charitable Resource of Southern Siskiyou 501(c)(3) and operates with permits from local and federal land managers. A portion of proceeds is donated annually to the Mt. Shasta High School cross country team.

Headwaters Trail Runs acknowledges that these races occur on the traditional homelands of the Winnemem Wintu, Nom Sus Wintu, Nom Ti Pom Wintu, Wintʰu• Po•m, Shasta, Modoc, Okwanuchu, Cayuse, Umatilla, Walla Walla, and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians.
