Tactical Off-Road Run on Dartmoor
The Haytor Heller is a well-established moorland race that has been held for 40 years. The event takes place on Dartmoor, starting below the landmark of Haytor Rock. The course covers approximately 6 miles using a single lap format that traverses rugged, open moorland, with two distinct sections passing through woodland below Hound Tor and Haytor.
The terrain consists of completely off-road tracks featuring several steep ascents and descents. Participants will encounter a stream crossing during the run. The route begins at Haytor Rock and concludes with a downhill section finishing opposite the middle car park at Haytor.
Event Regulations and Safety
Due to the nature of the terrain and safety requirements, specific rules apply to all participants:
- Strictly no headphones or earphones of any kind are permitted.
- Dogs and following cyclists are not allowed on the course.
- A strict cut-off point is enforced at the top of Hound Tor (approximately 4 miles). Runners must reach this point within one hour; those who do not will be asked to withdraw, and transport back to the start will be provided.
Facilities and Support
Race Headquarters is situated at the Coach Park within the lower car park area. While the site provides toilets, there are no changing or shower facilities available. Water stations are located at Hound Tor and at the finish line. Following the race, the organizers provide a selection of food, including cakes and a BBQ. The event is limited to 350 participants.
The race serves as a scoring event for the Dartmoor Fell Series. Registration is handled through an external entry system, and number transfers are only permitted on the day of the race at Headquarters for a small administration fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
