Event overview
The Haytor Heller takes place on Saturday 5th September 2026 and is in its 40th year. The event is a single-lap, off-road moorland race that starts below Haytor Rock and returns to finish opposite the middle car park at Haytor. The course length is approximately 6 miles. The race was part of the 2026 Dartmoor Fell Series and is a scoring event for that series.
Course details and rules
The route runs mostly across rugged, open moorland with two woodland sections - below Hound Tor and below Haytor - and includes a stream crossing. The course features several steep ascents and descents and finishes with a fast downhill section to the finish. The course is completely off-road. Dogs and following cyclists are not permitted to accompany runners. Headphones or earphones of any kind are prohibited for safety; runners who ignore this rule will be disqualified. There is a strict cut-off at the top of Hound Tor (about 4 miles); runners not reaching that point within one hour will be required to withdraw and will be given a lift back to Race HQ.
Facilities and entries
Race HQ is at the Coach Park at the far end of the lower car park. Toilets are available; there are no showers or changing facilities. Drinks are provided at Hound Tor (approx. 4 miles) and at the finish. Food and refreshments, including cakes and a BBQ, will be available. Entries open in spring and the race has a strict entry limit of 350. Number transfers are accepted only on the day, with an administration charge of £3 per transfer.
