Hatcher Pass Races
The Hatcher Pass Races are held in Hatcher Pass, a scenic area in the Matanuska-Susitna valley. The races take place once the gates through the pass are opened to the public after the winter.
The event features four distances. All courses travel along Hatcher Pass road between Hatcher Pass Lodge and Willow. The Marathon course is slightly longer than 26.2 miles, with the first 25 miles uphill and the last mile downhill. It has a total elevation gain of around 3,900 feet. The Hatcher Pass 50 is roughly 54 miles and has a total elevation gain of 5,000 feet. It begins with a steep climb before descending to the midway turnaround point, which is the Marathon start line. The 50-mile runners then follow the Marathon course back to the finish. Relay events are available for both distances, with teams of three runners.
Aid stations with water, electrolytes, and food are located every 2-5 miles along the course. The 50-mile participants will visit each station twice. Parking is limited at start and finish areas, and carpooling is encouraged. The race is point-to-point with no shuttle service; participants are responsible for their own transportation from the finish.
For the 50-mile race, one pacer and one crew vehicle are allowed per runner, with specific rules. No pacers are allowed for the marathon. All runners must carry a minimum 16-ounce water bottle and 400 calories of food. 50-mile runners must also carry a headlamp and a high-visibility vest.
