Hatcher Pass Races
The Hatcher Pass Races are point to point events on Hatcher Pass Road between Hatcher Pass Lodge and Willow, Alaska. The program includes a Marathon, a roughly 50 mile race, and 3-person relays that correspond to each distance.
Distances
- Hatcher Pass 50
- Hatcher Pass 50 Relay
- Marathon
- Marathon Relay
The Marathon route gains about 3,900 feet of elevation; the first 25 miles are uphill and the last mile-plus descends to the finish. The 50 mile course gains about 5,000 feet, begins with a steep climb, descends to the marathon turnaround, then follows the marathon course back toward the finish. The Marathon course is slightly longer than 26.2 miles and the 50 is roughly 54 miles.
Seven aid stations are placed every 2 to 5 miles and provide water, electrolytes, race fuel, and snacks. Marathon entries do not allow pacers. Relay teams must have three runners and may use one vehicle for exchanges at designated aid stations. 50 mile runners may have one pacer and one crew vehicle; pacers must wear a pacer bib and may not run more than 30 miles.
Required gear includes a minimum 16 oz water bottle and 400 calories. 50 mile entrants also need a headlamp and a hi visibility vest. Parking is limited and Independence Mine parking requires a $5 Alaska State Park permit. Drop bags can be checked at the start and will be transported to the finish.
