Hatcher Pass Races
The Hatcher Pass Races take place along Hatcher Pass Road between Hatcher Pass Lodge and Willow, Alaska. Courses use mountain roads and include substantial elevation changes: the marathon accumulates about 3,900 feet of gain, with the first 25 miles mostly uphill and the final 1+ mile downhill. The 50 mile course totals about 5,000 feet of gain, begins with a steep climb, descends to the marathon turnaround, then follows the marathon route back to the finish. The marathon is slightly longer than 26.2 miles and the 50 mile is roughly 54 miles.
Distances:
- Hatcher Pass 50 - roughly 54 miles, about 5000 ft elevation gain.
- Marathon - slightly longer than 26.2 miles, about 3900 ft elevation gain.
- Relay (3-person) - legs of 8 to 9 miles; teams must have three runners.
There are seven aid stations spaced about every 2 to 5 miles, stocked with water, electrolytes, race fuel, and snacks; 50 mile runners pass each station twice. Pacers are not allowed for the marathon. Relay teams may use one vehicle for exchanges and may not use pacers. For the 50 mile, one pacer and one crew vehicle are allowed per participant; pacers must wear a bib and may not run more than 30 miles. Required gear includes a minimum 16 oz water bottle and 400 calories, with headlamps and hi-visibility vests required for 50 mile runners. Parking is limited; 50 mile participants use Independence Mine lower lot and must have an Alaska State Park permit available on site for a $5 fee. The race is point to point, there is no shuttle, and drop bags collected at the start will be transported to the finish and must be marked.
