Event overview
The Harriers Pioneer 8 km is an annual road race initiated in 1980 and is part of the Vancouver Island Race Series. The race uses a certified, semi-flat rural road course and is sanctioned by BC Athletics. Official event records are 22:58 (1985) and 25:28 (2013). The race offers a regular prize purse of $850 and additional course-record bonuses of $500. High performance athletes may be eligible for complimentary entries based on recent certified 8 km results and published performance standards.
Course, logistics and registration
All race activities, including the start and finish, are based at the Saanich Fairgrounds, 1528 Stellys Cross Road, Saanichton, BC. Parking is available on the fairgrounds and at nearby Stelly's Secondary School. Post-race food and beverages are served in the fairground hall. Live computer results are posted shortly after finish by the timing contractor and later on race aggregators.
Online registration is required; there is no day-of-race registration. Entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Discounts apply for club members and for BC Athletics members per published policies. Race packet pickup is scheduled before race day at a local running store and on race weekend at the fairgrounds. Race rules specify road running only - no roller blades, strollers, or bicycles - and only registered guide dogs are permitted. Headphone use is discouraged and may lead to disqualification if it impedes officials or emergency response. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
