Event Overview
The Hardmoors 26.2 Goathland Trail Races take place in the North York Moors, starting from Goathland Village Hall. This winter event offers three distinct distances over hilly terrain:
- 27 miles (Marathon) with 3205 feet of ascent
- 16 miles (Half Marathon) with 2100 feet of ascent
- 7.5 miles (10k) with 1100 feet of ascent
The event is held under an Association of Running Clubs permit. Participants must be aware that these races are not taped or signed. Navigation is the responsibility of the runner, and everyone must carry a downloaded and printed race route description and map.
Requirements and Logistics
The race series enforces a strict compulsory kit policy due to the potential for hostile winter conditions. Mandatory items for all distances include a waterproof jacket with taped seams, hat, gloves, whistle, spare long-sleeved base layer, survival bag, and a foil blanket. Marathon runners are also required to carry a head torch and at least 500ml of water.
As a cupless event, runners must bring their own reusable cup for drinks at checkpoints and the finish. No dogs are permitted to run with participants, and dogs are not allowed inside the race headquarters. Car parking is available in Goathland via public and private pay car parks.
Registration and Categories
Entries are limited to 300 competitors across all distances. Registration and start times are staggered by distance. There are several prize categories, including top three male and female finishers, and various veteran age groups from V50 to V80, as well as a non-binary category. Finishers receive a medal, and there is an option to purchase an event t-shirt or choose to plant a tree. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
