Event Overview
The GutCheck Stratton is an adventure race held at the Stratton Mountain Resort in Vermont. This event combines trail running, mountain biking, and orienteering across rugged terrain. Unlike standard races, the exact course remains a secret until maps are distributed shortly before the start. Participants must navigate between designated checkpoints using their own interpretation of the provided map.
The course features significant elevation changes, including approximately 2,250 vertical feet of trail running and 1,000 vertical feet of cycling. The bike segments are designed for mountain bikes, though gravel cyclists with experience on single-track trails and sharp inclines may also participate. Some trail sections include sustained uphill pitches of up to 7%.
Participation and Categories
The event is open to individuals aged 18 and over. Participants can enter in the following categories:
- SOLO (male and female categories)
- 2-person team
- 3-person team
- 4-person team
Teams must remain in close contact throughout the duration of the race and are required to finish together. Each participant or team is required to designate a support porter to assist with gear transitions, such as transporting bikes or helmets between specific stages.
Logistics and Support
Expected finishing times range from 2 to 5 hours depending on fitness levels, with generous time cut-offs in place. Water and nutrition stations are located at 6 to 10 checkpoints along the course. Following the event, an awards ceremony and luncheon are held at the base lodge near the finish line. Mandatory equipment includes running gear, a mountain bike, and a helmet.
