The Run
The AJ Bell Great North Run is a half marathon. The event takes place on 13 September. It is described as the world's biggest half marathon, with 60,000 participants. The event started in 1981.
The start is on the A167 close to Claremont Road in Newcastle upon Tyne. The finish is at South Shields. The route is 13.1 miles long and includes a final mile-long seafront stretch. The course has both uphill and downhill sections. The route map shows specific uphill sections in miles 8-12.
Participants must be aged 17 or over on the day of the event. Entry is managed via a ballot, but charity places are also available. A membership scheme offers guaranteed entry and other benefits.
Event Details
A baggage drop service is available at the start, with buses to transport bags to the finish. An event guide with detailed information is available one month before the race.
The finish area in South Shields features an event village and an Après Run Zone with a beer and entertainment tent, exhibitors, and food vendors.
What Participants Receive
All finishers receive a medal. Official event photographers capture runner photos. Participants can download a free event app for tracking runners and accessing race day information. Exclusive discounts are offered for 12 months after entry.
