AJ Bell Great North Run
The Great North Run is a significant half marathon event that brings together 60,000 participants annually. The route spans 13.1 miles, beginning in the center of Newcastle upon Tyne and concluding at the seafront in South Shields. Established in 1981, the event attracts a massive community of runners of various abilities.
The course features a mix of elevation changes:
- Miles 1-2, 5-8, and 12-13.1 are primarily downhill sections.
- Miles 8-12 consist of several uphill stretches, often cited as one of the more demanding parts of the route.
- The final mile follows a flat stretch along the seafront.
Participants have several ways to enter the event, including a ballot system, charity places, or through a membership program. Entry is open to individuals aged 17 and older. For those running for a cause, numerous organizations offer places in exchange for fundraising.
The event site includes an "Après Run Zone" and an event village at the finish line, featuring exhibitors, food and drink vendors, and entertainment. Essential services for runners include baggage buses for storage and a dedicated mobile app for tracking participants and viewing professional photos. Every person who completes the course receives a finisher's medal.
