AJ Bell Great North 5k

The AJ Bell Great North 5k serves as the opening event for a significant weekend of sport in the North East. The race consists of a flat 5 km course situated around the Quayside area of Newcastle and Gateshead. Participants run past several of the city's landmarks and cross both the Swing Bridge and the Millennium Bridge. The event concludes with a grandstand finish located on the Tyne.

The course is designed to be accessible, with the event being open to runners aged 14 and older on the day of the race. Along the route, participants encounter local support, music, and various entertainment points. The event site includes an assembly area and organized wave starts to manage the flow of runners.

Participants receive several items as part of their entry:

  • A bespoke finisher medal
  • A personalized run number featuring the runner's name
  • An optional exclusive finisher t-shirt
  • A finishers' pack
  • Access to digital training plans and a rewards platform

The event organizers provide an optional finisher shirt system to support environmental initiatives. Runners may choose to forgo the t-shirt, in which case a donation is made to the National Trust Woodlands Appeal.
