Glacier Hills Ultra 50K : Newton Hills State Park, Canton SD, November 7, 2026
Glacier Hills Ultra is a trail race held at Newton Hills State Park near Canton, SD. The event offers multiple distances and uses a 10 km loop on the park trail system. Each loop has about 850 feet of elevation gain. The event enforces hard cutoffs by elapsed time for each distance.
Distances
- 50K - five 10 km loops
- 30K - three 10 km loops
- 20K - two 10 km loops
The course starts and finishes near the picnic shelter where the main aid station is located. Water is provided at about mile 4 of each loop and a full aid station is available at the loop start/finish (roughly mile 6). The course shares about four miles with horse trails; runners may encounter horses and horse-related trail conditions. Trail surfaces include roots, rocks, erosion boards, off-camber sections, dust, mud, and occasional horse droppings. The route is marked with signage, pin flags, tape, and volunteers.
Logistics note that parking options include a horse camp parking area roughly half a mile from the start/finish, with multiple vault toilets in that area and a single vault toilet at the start/finish. Drop bags may be left on a tarp beside the aid station but must be labeled and are not actively monitored. Swag includes Bella Canvas hoodies with an order deadline of October 1. A multi-year challenge award is available for runners who complete all three distances within the event time cutoffs. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
