Glacier Hills Ultra 50K - Newton Hills State Park, Canton SD
Glacier Hills Ultra offers three trail race distances at Newton Hills State Park near Canton, South Dakota. The event uses a 10 km loop through the park trail system; each loop has roughly 850 ft of elevation gain. Runners complete multiple loops to reach their chosen distance.
Distances:
- 50K
- 30K
- 20K
Each race passes the main start/finish aid station at the end of every loop, with additional water available near mile 4 of each loop. The 10 km loop includes several sustained climbs and descents, tree roots, erosion boards, and variable surface conditions such as dust, mud, and horse-related debris. Approximately four miles of the course overlap horse trails, so participants should be prepared for multi-use trail conditions.
Hard time cutoffs apply: 8 hours for the 50K, 7 hours for the 30K, and 6 hours for the 20K. Packet pickup details are to be determined. The organizers provide a tarp area for labeled drop bags at the aid station; 50K runners are encouraged to use horse camp parking as an additional drop-bag/aid option since it lies along the loop.
Event swag includes Bella Canvas hoodies, with the organizer's order placed in advance. A multi-year challenge award is available for participants who complete all three distances within the cutoffs over time. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
