5K Celebration - Confidence through Accomplishment
The event is a seasonal closing 5K that gives program participants a tangible sense of accomplishment. The 5K takes place at The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, VA and covers 3.1 miles.
The event is designed as a celebratory, noncompetitive experience. Participants who complete the course receive a medal, a t-shirt, a tote bag, and a branded bandana. Program girls and coaches are registered through the council and will have their bibs available at their team meet-up sign on the morning of the event. Family members and community participants may join but must register separately.
Safety and accessibility measures are in place: every participant must wear a 5K bib, course marshals are stationed along the route, and designated parking spots are available. Each Girls on the Run or Heart & Sole participant is paired with a 5K buddy for guidance; buddies must be at least 16 years old. A virtual 5K option is offered so the distance can be completed at a time and place of the participant’s choosing.
Volunteer roles support the event and include cheer stations, water stops, course marshals, and finish line support. After the 5K there is an afterparty for participants featuring live music, food, and drinks. Merchandise is available at the event shop tent.
