Girls on the Run Chicago 5K

5K Celebration

Girls on the Run Chicago holds a season-closing, celebratory 5K that gives program participants a tangible sense of accomplishment. The event is presented in multiple formats across Chicagoland, and every registered participant who completes the course receives a commemorative medal. Fall 5Ks are free and fall program participants are automatically registered; family members and running buddies attending CARA Go Run events must register.

Teams choose how to participate, with coaches selecting the local option that best fits their group. Site-based 5Ks take place at schools, community centers, or neighborhood parks and are run on a smaller scale with council-provided materials and volunteer support. CARA Go Run events are free timed 5K and 1 Mile events hosted at local parks and open to family and community members who register.

Safety and accessibility measures are in place. Every participant must wear a race bib and run with a Running Buddy, defined as an adult aged 18 or older or a sibling aged 15 or older. The council monitors the course and provides a safety plan and trained staff or volunteers for emergencies. Events are accessible; participants may walk, run, push, or roll at their own pace. Liability waivers are required for registration. Additional features noted for many events include activity stations, volunteer roles for setup and cleanup, and a private nursing station without power or refrigeration.
