Gillie Girl Sprint Triathlon : event overview
The Gillie Girl Sprint Triathlon is an all-women multisport event held at Gillie Lake in Veteran's Memorial Park, Sands and Gillie Brooke Roads, Camillus, NY. It is presented as the 13th Annual edition and includes individual and team relay entries plus an aquabike category. The venue is located approximately 2 miles off Route 5 near West Hill Golf Course at the intersection of Ike Dixon Road between Sand Road and Gillie Brook Road.
The course uses a natural, spring-fed lake for the swim and a relatively flat, 15 mile bike course. The run is a spectator friendly 5k. Aquabike participants swim and ride the same courses as the triathlon and finish when the bike leg is complete. The event day is described as family friendly, with food, live music, and activities for children.
Event origins and fundraising are part of the program. The race was started to encourage women to engage in triathlon, to build a health-focused community, and to raise money for breast cancer research. To date the event has donated over $150,000 to breast cancer research, an amount described as funding three research grants.
