Giant Acorn Triathlon Festival
The Giant Acorn Triathlon Festival is staged at Lake Anna State Park in Spotsylvania, Virginia. The festival hosts two main race days with Olympic and Sprint distance triathlons and corresponding aquabike events. The swim start is a sandy beach time trial and the swim course is rectangular with two right turns and sighting buoys roughly every 75 meters. Water temperatures in this section of the lake typically register in the low 70s Fahrenheit; water quality is tested and the swim will be canceled if conditions are unsafe.
Bike courses use rural country roads with varied terrain. The Olympic bike is a lollipop style 24.6 mile route; the Sprint bike is a 15.5 mile lollipop route. Run courses are entirely on asphalt within the state park, are heavily shaded, and include a significant climb out of transition plus a downhill section toward the finish where athletes veer into a finishing chute.
Race categories include Overall, Masters, Age Group, Aquabike, Military, Clydesdale, Athena, Collegiate, and Relay Teams. All events are USA Triathlon sanctioned and registrations are nonrefundable, with options for race insurance and a one time deferral. Packet pick up is offered at the race site on the listed pre-race days. The venue includes park trails, a playground, a swimming beach, and a visitors center. Swag for athletes includes a tri-blend race shirt, custom race socks, and a finisher medal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
