Geyser Growl Half Marathon
The Geyser Growl Half Marathon is a USATF certified half marathon (13.1 miles) held in western North Carolina. The fifth running moves runners from Lake Tomahawk Park in Black Mountain, past the historic Andrews Geyser, and into Old Fort, where the course finishes at Hillman Beer Old Fort.
The course begins with a circuit around Black Mountain for the first two miles, climbs Old US 70 to the crest near the Ridgecrest Conference Center, then descends on a mix of dirt and paved road into Old Fort. The course certification number is NC22020BDS. There are six aid stations placed at roughly two mile intervals; supplies include water, Gatorade, and cookies at specified stations.
The event is limited to 500 participants. Registration opens January 1 and closes October 15 or when the field sells out. Entry fees are tiered by date: $70 from January 1 to March 31, $80 from April 1 to August 31, and $90 from September 1 through race day. Chip timing is used, with the timing chip affixed to the back of the race bib. Packet pickup is available near Lake Tomahawk Park prior to the race.
Post race offerings include snacks, water, Gatorade and hot soup, and participants over 21 may exchange the bib ticket for one Hillman beer. Every finisher receives a commemorative medal and awards are presented for overall, masters 40 and over, and age group placements. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
