Geyser Growl Half Marathon : event description
The Geyser Growl Half Marathon is the fifth running of an annual half marathon held in October. The course begins at Lake Tomahawk Park in Black Mountain and finishes in Old Fort at the Hillman Beer Old Fort location, passing the historic Andrews Geyser along the route.
The course takes runners around Black Mountain for the first two miles, climbs Old US 70 to the crest at the Ridgecrest Conference Center, then descends on a mix of dirt and paved roads into Old Fort. The route is USATF certified (Certification No. NC22020BDS). There are six aid stations spaced at roughly two-mile intervals; stations provide water, Gatorade, and in some locations cookies. Chip timing is used via a timing chip on the back of the race bib.
Race capacity is limited to 500 participants. Registration opens January 1 and closes October 15 or when the event sells out. Entry fee tiers are: $70 (Jan 1–Mar 31), $80 (Apr 1–Aug 31), and $90 (Sep 1–race day); platform service charges and taxes are added at checkout. Packet pickup is available the day before and the morning of the race at Lake Tomahawk Park pavilion. Ticketed shuttle service is offered between Old Fort and the start; parking options include designated areas in Black Mountain or Old Fort. Post-race provisions include snacks, water, Gatorade, hot soup, and one Hillman beer exchange for runners over 21. All finishers receive a commemorative finisher medal. Transfers are permitted for a processing fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
