General Smallwood Triathlon
The General Smallwood Triathlon is staged at General Smallwood State Park in Marbury near Indian Head, Maryland. The event offers Olympic and Sprint triathlon distances and aquabike options, with open-water swims in Mattawoman Bay and bike and run legs on rural Charles County roads.
Distances:
- Olympic triathlon: 1.5K swim, 24 mile bike, 10K run
- Sprint triathlon: 750 m swim, 16 mile bike, 5K run
- Aquabike options mirror swim and bike distances
Swim details note an in-water start from the marina main dock, two rectangular loops, four yellow turn buoys, and orange sighting buoys approximately every 75 meters. Swimmers exit via the nearby boat ramp. The marina is active and pre-swimming at the site is not permitted. A water temperature reading is taken and posted the Thursday before the race.
Bike courses follow well paved, low traffic roads with rolling hills and wide shoulders. One turn near mile five differentiates the Olympic and Sprint bike routes. Reported elevations are approximately 860 feet for the Olympic bike and 605 feet for the Sprint bike.
Run courses wind along the shoulder of Chickamuxen Road and through the state park; the Olympic run consists of two laps of the Sprint loop. Aid stations are provided approximately every mile on the run. The event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon and athletes must hold a USAT membership or purchase a one day license. Packet pickup is available both the day before and on race morning at the race site. Participants receive a tech shirt, socks, finisher medal, and post race food.
