General Smallwood Triathlon : General overview
The General Smallwood Triathlon is staged at General Smallwood State Park marina in Marbury, Maryland, with swims in Mattawoman Bay and bike and run courses on nearby Charles County roads. The event offers Olympic and Sprint triathlon distances and aquabike options.
Distances
- General Smallwood Olympic: 1.5K swim, 24 mile bike, 10K run
- General Smallwood Sprint: 750 meter swim, 16 mile bike, 5K run
- Aquabike options follow the swim and bike distances above
Swim course details include an in-water start off the marina main dock, two rectangular loops for the Olympic swim, four yellow turn buoys, orange sighting buoys about every 75 meters, and an exit via the nearby boat ramp. The bay area is relatively shallow and warms quickly; a water temperature reading is posted the Thursday before the race. Pre-swimming at the site is not permitted due to marina activity.
Bike courses use well paved, low traffic rural roads with rolling hills and wide shoulders. One turn at mile 5 differentiates the Olympic and Sprint bike routes. Approximate elevation gain is 860 feet for the Olympic and 605 feet for the Sprint. Run courses are shaded and rolling; the Olympic run is two loops of the Sprint course and the Sprint is a single loop. Aid stations are located approximately every mile on the run. The final mile re-enters the park and crosses over Mattawoman Bay before the finish; a post-race BBQ is provided.
Packet pickup occurs at the marina parking area on the Friday before the race and on race morning. Photo ID is required and participants must collect their own packet. The event is USA Triathlon sanctioned; athletes must have a current USAT membership or purchase a one-day license. Registrations are non-refundable.
