General Smallwood Triathlon
This event is staged at General Smallwood State Park on Mattawoman Bay in Marbury, Maryland. The festival offers both Olympic and Sprint triathlon options and was sold out the previous year. Races are USA Triathlon sanctioned and follow time trial individual starts. Packet pickup is available at the race site on a Friday and on race day; participants must collect their own packet and present photo ID. Registrations are non-refundable and deferrals are available.
Distances
- Olympic: 1.5K swim, 24 mile bike, 10K run
- Sprint: 750 meter swim, 16 mile bike, 5K run
Swim details: The swim begins in water off the marina main dock and uses a rectangular loop course with two laps for the Olympic distance. The course has four yellow turn buoys and orange sighting buoys about every 75 meters. Swimmers exit via the nearby boat ramp. The bay area is relatively shallow and warms quickly; a water temperature reading is posted the Thursday before the race. Pre-swimming at the marina is not allowed.
Bike and run details: Bike routes use well paved rural roads with rolling terrain, wide shoulders and low traffic. One turn near mile five separates the Olympic and Sprint bike routes. Run courses use the shoulder of Chickamuxen Road and park roads; the Olympic run is two loops of the Sprint loop, the Sprint is one loop. Aid stations are provided on the run. The final mile returns to the park and crosses Mattawoman Bay just before the finish. Amenities include a tech shirt, race socks, a finisher medal, post race food and free finisher photos.
