General Smallwood Triathlon
The General Smallwood Triathlon is staged at General Smallwood State Park in Marbury / Indian Head, Maryland, with open-water swims in Mattawoman Bay and bike and run courses on rural Charles County roads. The 2026 race is sold out.
Event distances include:
- Olympic: 1.5K swim, 24 mile bike, 10K run
- Sprint: 750 m swim, 16 mile bike, 5K run
The swim uses an in-water start from the marina main dock, two rectangular loops and an exit at the nearby boat ramp. The course is marked with four yellow turn buoys and orange sighting buoys about every 75 meters. The bay area is relatively shallow and warms quickly; a water temperature reading is posted the Thursday before the event. Pre-swimming at the venue is not permitted.
Both bike courses wind through rural countryside on well paved roads with rolling hills, smooth pavement, wide shoulders and low traffic. One turn at mile 5 differentiates the Olympic and Sprint bike routes. Approximate total bike elevation is 860 feet for the Olympic course and 605 feet for the Sprint course.
Run courses follow Chickamuxen Road and park roads through shaded, rolling terrain. The Olympic run is two loops of the Sprint course; aid stations are located approximately every mile. The event is USA Triathlon sanctioned. Packet pickup occurs at the race site; participants must present photo ID to collect materials.
