General Smallwood Triathlon
The General Smallwood Triathlon is staged at General Smallwood State Park with open water swims in Mattawoman Bay and bike and run courses that travel on rural roads in Charles County. The swim uses an in water start off the marina dock, follows a two loop rectangular course, and exits at the nearby boat ramp. The swim course has four yellow turn buoys and orange sighting buoys approximately every 75 meters. Pre-swimming at the marina is not permitted.
Courses are described as rolling with low traffic and smooth pavement. The Olympic bike has about 860 feet of elevation and the Sprint bike about 605 feet. The run courses are shaded and looped, with roughly 340 feet of elevation for the Olympic run and about 160 feet for the Sprint run. Aid stations are placed along the run course approximately every mile. The final mile re-enters the park and crosses over Mattawoman Bay before the finish area; post race food and a BBQ are provided.
Race options include Olympic and Sprint triathlons plus aquabike and relay entries. Categories scored include Overall, Masters, Age Group, Aquabike, Military, Clydesdale, Athena, and Relay with scoring three deep. The event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon. Packet pickup occurs at the race site on the day before and on race day; participants must present photo identification to collect race materials.
