About the race
General Smallwood is a triathlon festival held at General Smallwood State Park in Indian Head, MD. The event features Olympic and Sprint triathlon and aquabike distances and is staged from the marina and park grounds. The 2026 edition was sold out.
Distances include:
- Olympic Triathlon: 1.5K swim; 24 mile bike; 10K run.
- Sprint Triathlon: 750m swim; 16 mile bike; 5K run.
- Aquabike options follow the swim and bike distances above.
The swim takes place in Mattawoman Bay with an in-water start off the marina dock, two rectangular loops for the Olympic course, four yellow turn buoys and orange sighting buoys about every 75 meters. Swimmers exit via the nearby boat ramp. The venue is a working marina so there is no pre-swimming; a water temperature reading is posted the Thursday before the race.
Bike routes run on well paved, rural roads with rolling hills, wide shoulders and low traffic. One turn at mile 5 separates the Olympic and Sprint bike routes. Approximate elevation gains are provided by the organizer for each course.
Run courses use the shoulder of Chickamuxen Road and paths through the state park; the Olympic run is two laps of the Sprint loop. The run is shaded and rolling, with aid stations approximately every mile and a final re-entry over Mattawoman Bay before the finish and a post-race BBQ.
The event is USA Triathlon sanctioned. Race categories include age group, masters, overall, aquabike, military, Clydesdale, Athena and relay teams. Packet pickup is available at the race site with specific ID requirements; registrations are non-refundable and deferrals and race-day information are provided by the organizer.
