Glasgow to Edinburgh Ultra : overview
The Glasgow to Edinburgh Ultra is a point-to-point ultramarathon of 57 miles with 231 m of elevation. The event starts at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow and finishes at Edinburgh Athletics Track (Saughton Sports Complex). The route follows the River Kelvin, Sustrans Route 754, the Forth and Clyde Canal, the Union Canals, and the Water of Leith, passing landmarks such as the Falkirk Wheel and the Antonine Wall. The race uses live online GPS tracking with trackers that update approximately every two minutes and include an SOS button. Entry is limited to 750 places and the entry fee is £119. The overall cut-off for the event is 16 hours. Medals are awarded by finishing position: top 200 Gold, 201-400 Silver, 401+ Bronze.
Logistics, kit and rules
Qualification requires being at least 20 years old and having completed an organised marathon beforehand. Pacers are not permitted. There are seven checkpoints along the route; checkpoints 1 and 5 are water-only, others provide food and drinks and have medical cover. Checkpoint cut-off times are strictly enforced and failure to check in at a checkpoint will lead to disqualification.
Mandatory kit (must be carried at all times, random checks will be made):
- Waterproof coat with sealed seams (min 10,000 mm)
- Long-sleeved base layer in a dry bag
- Water containers - minimum 1 litre capacity
- Fully charged mobile phone
- Foil blanket
- Headtorch or primary light source (min 75 lumens)
- Backup torch (not a mobile phone)
- Whistle
- GPS tracker issued at registration
Optional dropbags are accepted (max 50 L). Support crew rules and parking restrictions apply at certain checkpoints and at the finish. Lost or unreturned GPS trackers incur a charge of £150 + VAT.
