Nighttime Beach Running in Galveston
The Galveston Island Sand Crab is a nighttime running event taking place entirely on the sand at R.A. Apffel East Beach Park. This event offers a unique running environment under the stars, with courses following the coastline. Participants have several distance options to choose from:
- 10 km
- 5 km
- Kid’s Beach 1 km
All participants are required to use a flashlight or headlamp to navigate the beach, while the course itself is marked with LED lights. The routes are designed as out-and-back courses, starting at East Beach and heading west before returning to the finish line at the pavilion.
The event is chip timed for all distances, including the youth race. The 5 km distance is walker-friendly with a two-hour time limit. The 10 km distance shares this two-hour cutoff, requiring runners to reach the 3.1-mile turnaround point within one hour. For the Kid's Beach 1 km, the time limit is 30 minutes, and parents may run alongside their children.
Manned water stations providing sports drinks and water are positioned along the course, with two stations for the 5 km and four for the 10 km. Registered participants receive a technical shirt and a custom finisher medal. A post-race gathering at the beach pavilion features refreshments and local beer from the Galveston Island Brewing Co for those with proper identification.
