Event Overview
The FSRC Independence 5000 is a running event held at Riverside Park in Frederick, Maryland. This low-key race is organized to celebrate the July 4th holiday and features a single distance:
- 5 km
Course and Logistics
The race takes place on a paved trail through the park and follows an out and back format. Participants can find two water stops along the course to assist with hydration. Parking is available in the lot at Riverside Park, where bib pickup is also located.
The event utilizes chip timing to record participant performance. As a backup measure to ensure accurate results, volunteers scan bibs manually as runners cross the finish line. Following the run, participants are encouraged to bring a food item to share for a post-race gathering.
Registration and Participation
Entry for the race is free for members of the Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club (FSRC). Those who are not members may join the club to receive free entry, as membership must be active on the day of the race. Registration is conducted online, and while race day sign-ups are permitted, they must be completed on a personal electronic device since paper forms and kiosks are not provided.
Competition and Awards
The event is part of the FSRC Grand Prix competition. Awards are presented in several categories, including the top male, female, and non-binary finishers based on clock time. Additionally, results for age group divisions are determined by net time. Age groups range from 12 and under to 70 and over, divided into ten-year increments.
