Frozen Gnome
The Frozen Gnome is a winter trail race in Crystal Lake, Illinois, scheduled for January 9, 2027. The event offers two distances on a single-track, hilly course that runs through Veteran Acres and Sterne’s Woods.
The available distances are:
- 10K
- 50K (five laps of the 10K loop)
The course is a 10K loop with notable hills and a feature called Butt Slide Hill. There is one main aid station called the Gnome Depot at the start-finish area, stocked with hot soup, homemade goodies, coffee, and drinks. One unmanned aid station on course provides a sports drink. Runners pass the start-finish area each lap.
Race logistics center on Veteran Acres. The start line is at the park shelter north of the tennis courts and baseball field, with parking in the main lot at 431 Walkup Road. Race packets are distributed at the concession stand near the large parking lot. No pacers, human or dogs, are allowed.
Awards and race items include prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall male and female, age-group first-place awards in 10-year spans, and finisher medals for all finishers in both distances. Race swag includes a Frozen Gnome shirt and a bib. The organizer rates the course triple black diamond. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
