Franklin Mountains Trail Runs
The Franklin Mountains Trail Runs are a set of trail races held in El Paso, Texas, entirely within Franklin Mountains State Park (Tom Mays Unit off of Transmountain Road). The program includes multiple distances and event formats:
- 100K
- 50K
- 27K
- 1/2 Marathon
- 10K
- King of Mtn
- 5K
Courses ascend from the desert floor to the summit area of North Franklin Peak and then circumnavigate the mountain back to the finish. Portions of the route provide sunrise views and long vistas that include mountains in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, and views across the Mexico border.
North Franklin Peak has a summit elevation of 7,192 feet, roughly 3,000 feet above the city below. The Franklin Mountains are described as the largest sustained mountain range in Texas. On the eastern flank of North Franklin Mountain are the remnants of a tin mining, milling, and smelting operation that was active from 1910 through 1915.
Franklin Mountains State Park offers primitive only camping without water. The event is organized by Wanderlust Running and takes place on trails within the Tom Mays Unit off Transmountain Road. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
