The Fort Smith General Darby Challenge
The Fort Smith General Darby Challenge is a military-inspired event held in downtown Fort Smith. The race serves to honor General William O. Darby, a Fort Smith native, and celebrates the connection between the city and its Italian sister cities, Cisterna and Nago-Torbole. This is a non-sanctioned but timed event that starts at the Darby Statue.
Participants can choose to complete the course as a ruck march, a run, or a walk. The event offers several different distances to accommodate various preferences:
- 13.1 miles (Half Marathon)
- 10 km
- 5 km
In addition to the physical event in Fort Smith, a virtual participation option is available for those unable to attend in person. All participants who complete their chosen challenge receive a finisher medal, and special recognition is provided for top times in the respective categories.
The tournament supports local historical preservation, with proceeds benefiting the Fort Smith Museum of History and the Darby House Organization. The event route takes participants through the downtown area, and limited registration items such as commemorative coins and t-shirts are typically produced for the occasion.
