Morven Hill Race
The Morven Hill Race is a hill-running event held on Saturday 3rd October 2026 near Dinnet and Aboyne. The race starts at Groddie, By Dinnet, Aboyne (Grid Ref NJ410044). Routes are marked and runners are expected to follow the marked route.
Distances and climbs:
- Full Morven: 8.8 km, 660 m climb
- Half Morven: 4.0 km, 400 m climb
- Mini Morven: 1.8 km, 125 m climb
The full course takes a direct line up Morven above the ruined cottage of Balhennie, follows good tracks to the summit, and descends via the bealach below Roar Hill before returning northeast towards Balhennie and the finish. The half course follows the full route to the first plateau before cutting left to rejoin the descent. The mini race is an out-and-back for U14 and U12 participants, finishing at the lone tree on the full-race descent route.
The event is insured through Scottish Hill Runners and is run under their rules. Juniors who are under 17 on 31 December are not eligible for the full race. All full-race entrants must carry full waterproof body cover with taped seams, a hat, gloves, and a paper map and compass. Dogs must be kept on a lead in the assembly and finish area only; dogs are not allowed on the hill due to sheep. Entry on the day may be possible subject to available space. Prize giving and series awards take place after the race, and the event forms the third and final race of the Aberdeenshire Hillrace Series.
