FLOW Stormwater Runoff 5K
The FLOW Stormwater Runoff 5K takes place in Powell, Ohio, coinciding with Stormwater Awareness Week. This initiative aims to educate the public on how stormwater pollution impacts land, water, and agricultural resources. The event highlights the importance of clean stormwater in protecting local streams, drinking water, and natural resources.
Participants can choose from two available distances:
- 5K
- 1 Mile
All proceeds from the event benefit Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed (FLOW), a volunteer based nonprofit organization established in 1997. The organization focuses on keeping the Olentangy River and its tributaries clean and safe. Funds generated support various conservation activities, including tree plantings, the removal of invasive species, and stream quality monitoring conducted by citizen scientists.
The organization also manages volunteer-run tree nurseries that grow over 2,500 native trees and bushes for restoration efforts and community giveaways. Additionally, the group coordinates litter cleanups and pollinator garden maintenance. In the previous year, these efforts resulted in the removal of over 6,000 pounds of trash and 481 tires from the watershed area. The event serves as a platform to support these ongoing environmental restoration and public education projects within the local ecosystem.
