About the race
The Flag Run 5k is an annual July 4 event in Boerne, Texas, that grew from a local tradition of running through town while carrying American flags. The event offers two distances:
- 5 km
- 1 mile walk
Each participant receives a t-shirt and a finisher medal. The event includes food, drinks, music, aid stations, and official timing. Awards are given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall male and female finishers, and for 1st, 2nd and 3rd runners carrying a full standard size American flag. A post race celebration takes place on the plaza.
The event has recorded steady community support. Last year more than 350 runners took part and organizers plan for over 500 participants. Since 2019, the event has donated a total of $35,500 to the VFW and the Boerne Fire Department. Last year a $2,500 scholarship was awarded to a high school senior for fire training. Proceeds this year are designated for the Boerne Fire Department to support department programs and scholarship funding for those pursuing a career in the fire service.
