First Responders Relay : California Police Athletic Federation

The First Responders Relay is a six person, 30 mile running relay for first responder personnel, hosted by the California Police Athletic Federation, a 501c(3) nonprofit. The course starts and finishes at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach in Ventura, California. Runners follow the Promenade north to the Pacific Coast Highway, continue along PCH and the bike trail to Rincon Point Beach Parking Lot, then return the same way to the finish.

Stages range from 4.2 miles to 6 miles and there are six exchange points. Eligible teams are formed by law enforcement agencies, fire department agencies, fire/paramedics, and retired personnel. To be eligible each participant must be publicly employed or a retiree in positions such as peace officer, firefighter, emergency medical technician, customs, or correctional officer; retirees or separated employees with ten or more years of service must provide proof of service. Support personnel categories may include dispatchers, detention custodial officers, crime scene investigators, lifeguards, reserve officers, volunteer firefighters, and other frontline responders pending approval.

Teams consist of six runners. A runner who begins a stage must finish that stage; no substitution is allowed for a downed runner. Alternates may replace no shows at exchange points. Each team must provide an assigned volunteer for course duties. Entry fee is $800 and registration opens June 1 with the race limited to the first 100 paid entries. Team captains handle registration, waiver collection, running order submission, and other team administration. Race rules require baton carrying, bib on the front, and use of the right side of the trail. Awards are presented by category after results are adjudicated.
