Fellowship of the Idiots 19.7-Mile Run
The Fellowship of the Idiots 19.7-Mile Run celebrates its 23rd year in 2026. Organised by the Uwharrie Brewing Running Club, this non-timed event is traditionally held as a training run for upcoming marathons. The course begins at the Stanly County Family YMCA, proceeds to the summit of Morrow Mountain, and returns to the starting point.
Participants travel through hilly terrain with views of the sunrise from the mountain top. While the primary distance is 19.7 miles, other distance options are available for those not completing the full course:
- 12 miles: Turn around at the corner of Valley Drive and Morrow Mountain Road.
- 14+ miles: Turn around at the front gate of Morrow Mountain State Park.
The event utilizes a rolling start format. Faster participants have more flexibility in their departure, while those with a slower pace are advised to start earlier to meet the course closure requirement. The full 19.7-mile distance is required to earn the official event ringer T-shirt.
On-course support includes aid stations located approximately every two miles. These stations provide water, electrolyte drinks, and energy gels at specific points, such as the summit. The Stanly County Amateur Radio Club provides additional monitoring along the route. Facilities at the Stanly County Family YMCA include bathrooms and showers available later in the morning; participants must provide their own towels.
Registration for new participants includes a fee that covers race expenses and apparel. Returning participants may register without a fee, though donations are requested to cover costs for emergency medical services, police support, snacks, and permits.
