Fast and Furriest Running Event
The Fast and Furriest is a community running event held in Palmer, Alaska. The race starts at the Palmer Train Depot and offers participants the opportunity to run alongside their canine companions. All race proceeds benefit Dogs2DogTags, a nonprofit organization that provides service dogs to veterans.
Participants can choose from several event distances:
- 10K running race
- 5K running race
- 5K virtual race
The virtual option is available for those unable to attend in person or for participants with dogs that prefer a more solitary environment. Virtual participants can collect their giveaway bags at a local footwear store in Palmer following the event.
The course primarily utilizes local pavements, which may feature variable conditions in October, including the potential for snow or ice. For safety, the 10K distance includes a cutoff time at the halfway point. The event provides water, electrolytes, and light snacks at the finish line. All participants receive a dog bandana, while dogs receive a special treat upon completion. Awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers, as well as the top three dog-and-owner teams in both the 5K and 10K categories.
Strict safety rules apply for animal participation. Dogs must be on a standard six-foot non-retractable leash at all times, and only one dog is permitted per handler. All participating dogs must be up to date on vaccinations. Registration is conducted exclusively online, as there is no day-of-race registration available.
