Event Overview

The Fall Foliage Adventure Race is a multi-discipline event involving paddling (canoe/kayak), biking, trekking, and navigation. It takes place in October in and around the historic Jamestown area of Williamsburg, Virginia. Participants can race solo or as a team. The event is USARA-sanctioned. Spectators are allowed to watch, take pictures, or picnic but are not permitted to assist participants.

Race Formats

The event offers two main formats with time limits:

  • 5-Hour Race: Involves biking, canoe/kayak paddling, and trekking. The biking portion uses a mix of gravel and paved surfaces. It starts alongside the longer race and uses parts of that course.
  • 24-Hour Race: Involves paddling, trekking, and biking through multiple parks and conservancies, continuing through the night into the next morning. The course covers historical sites.

Additional Details

Adventure racing is described as orienteering using multiple modes of travel. Participants use a map and compass to navigate to checkpoints within the time limit, choosing their own optimal route. The winner is the individual or team that finds the most checkpoints. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
