Event overview
Elm Creek Backyard Ultra is a backyard-format ultramarathon held in Maple Grove, Minnesota on April 24, 2026. The event follows the Backyard Ultra format: runners complete repeated loops of a set distance, starting each loop on the hour. Registration opened on September 1, 2025 and closes on April 20, 2026. The organizers anticipate a capacity of about 190 runners and will operate a waitlist if the race fills.
Course and format
The course is a 4.167 mile loop at Elm Creek Park Reserve, beginning and ending at the Bluebird Picnic area. The route runs along the lake trail and around Mud Lake and includes about 296 feet of elevation gain and loss. The direction of the loop will rotate between clockwise and counterclockwise every few hours. Loops continue until a single runner completes a loop on their own; that runner is declared the winner. Distance covered for all participants will be recorded.
Rules and logistics
Each loop must be started at the top of the hour. Once the bell is rung to begin a loop, runners must stay on course and may not receive aid or pacing while on the loop. Crews may provide support between loops; a small area near the start/finish is available for chairs and coolers, and a designated picnic area (approx. 50-100 yds away) may be used for tents. Overnight gate access is restricted and crew re-entry is limited until dawn. Whistle and bell signals mark the countdown and loop starts.
