What is a Durango Trails Backyard Ultra?
A Backyard Ultra is a "last person standing" format. Runners must complete a 4.17-mile loop, called a "yard," every hour on the Spurline Trail System in Durango. The loop uses dirt roads and the Railspike single-track trail. Anyone finishing a loop in less than an hour waits until the top of the next hour to start again. The race continues hour after hour until only one runner remains; that runner must complete one more yard to win.
Where and when?
The event is on Saturday, May 30, 2026, on the Spurline Trail System (Three Springs) in Durango, Colorado.
Course and conditions
The course is a soft-surface trail with scenic views. Late May weather in southwest Colorado can range from sunny and warm to cold and sleeting, with temperatures dropping significantly at night. Muddy trails are possible; an alternate dirt road route is available if trails are not runnable.
Aid and facilities
One aid station at the basecamp provides water, Tailwind hydration, typical ultra snacks, fruit, chips, sweets, and three meals per day. Soup, broth, and coffee are available overnight. Porta potties are located at basecamp.
Registration and cost
The entry fee is $60. Discounts are available for Durango Trails volunteers from the 2025 season, Durango Trails members, and runners under 18. All runners must secure pledges totaling at least $10 per yard completed. All proceeds support the nonprofit Durango Trails.
Other details
Personal basecamp spots are 8x8 or 10x10 on dirt. Participants are encouraged to bring weights and stakes for tents due to potential high winds. Crews are welcome. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
