Event overview
The Vallecito Lake Heavy Half Marathon takes place on May 16, 2026 in Bayfield, Colorado. The event is limited to 250 runners and serves as a fundraiser for local nonprofits. Registration fee for the main event is listed as $80.50. Durango Running Club members receive a 10% discount when their membership is current. The race is a cupless event; runners are asked to bring their own water bottle, soft flask, or cup.
Course
The route runs clockwise around Vallecito Reservoir for approximately 14 miles with about 1,000 feet of climbing. The surface breakdown is four miles of paved road, 3.5 miles of trail, and 6.5 miles of dirt or gravel road. The course follows County Road 501, includes a single-track section at the Kokanee Picnic Area, crosses private property on a designated right-of-way, runs across Vallecito Dam, and finishes after a single-track section on the west side of the lake.
Services and logistics
There are four aid stations starting near mile 3.5 that provide water and Tailwind; the last three aid stations include snacks. Vault toilets are located near miles 2.5, 8.5, and 12.5 and porta-potties are available at start/finish. All participants must have a valid PRID use pass for parking. The race is professionally timed with an RFID chip on the back of the bib. Results will be posted online after the event. Refunds and transfers are generally not offered.
