Dunes Dash 5K
The Dunes Dash 5K takes place at West Beach within the Indiana Dunes National Park in Gary, Indiana. This annual trail event is organized by Save the Dunes and focuses on the preservation and advocacy of the local natural landscapes, including Lake Michigan and the surrounding dunes.
The event features two primary distances:
- 5 km Run/Walk
- 1 mile Kids Fun Run
The 5 km course consists of sandy and hilly trails. Participants will navigate a terrain that includes stairs and various elevation changes. This trail experience differs from traditional road races due to the natural surface and physical requirements of the dune environment. Younger participants can participate in the 1 mile Kids Fun Run, which is held in a supportive environment within the park.
Awards are provided for several categories, including overall male and female winners and masters (40+) finishers. Age group awards are also distributed to the top three male and female finishers in brackets ranging from 13 and under to 70 and older.
Participants should note that an Indiana Dunes National Park pass is required for entry to the venue. These are available at the gate or through the National Park service. Registrations completed before May 1, 2026, have the option to add an event t-shirt for an additional fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
