Duddon Valley Fell Race

The Duddon Valley Fell Race features two category A fell races located around the peaks at the head of the Duddon Valley in the Lake District. The event is based at the Newfield Inn in Seathwaite and is organized by local runners with a focus on mountain navigation and self-sufficiency.

Participants can choose between two distinct distances:

  • Long Duddon: An 18 mile (approx. 29 km) course with 6000 feet (1828 m) of ascent over Harter, Hardknott, Little Stand, Swirl How, Dow Crag, White Pike, and Caw.
  • Short Duddon: A 10 mile (approx. 16 km) course with 3000 feet (914 m) of climb, including Dow Crag and Caw.

The terrain is described as difficult and includes rough mountain ground often without established paths or trails. Specific hazards include single-track sections, wet and boggy bridleways, and a quarry cliff near the route. Water sources on the course are limited after the Three Shires Stone.

Due to the nature of the terrain, all competitors must possess mountaineering skills for fast travel and be proficient in using a map and compass, particularly in low visibility. Required safety kit includes a map of the area, a compass, a whistle, and full body cover which must be carried or worn throughout the race. Registration takes place on the morning of the event at the Newfield Inn. Pre-entry is required as there is no entry available on the day. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
