Duddon Valley Fell Race
The Duddon Valley Fell Race consists of two category A fell races located around the peaks at the head of the Duddon Valley. Both routes start and end at the Newfield Inn in Seathwaite. These events take place on difficult terrain that often lacks trods or established paths, requiring participants to have mountaineering skills suited for rough mountain landscapes.
Participants can choose between two race distances:
- Long Duddon: An 18 mile course featuring 6000 feet of ascent over Harter, Hardknott, Little Stand, Swirl How, Dow Crag, White Pike, and Caw.
- Short Duddon: A 10 mile course featuring 3000 feet of ascent over Dow and Caw.
As category A races, navigational ability is essential. Competitors must be proficient in using a map and compass, particularly in conditions of poor visibility. Mandatory safety equipment includes a map of the area, a compass, a whistle, and full body cover which must be worn or carried throughout the event.
The course features specific technical hazards, including single track sections, wet and boggy bridleways near Grassguards, and steep descents from Little Stand and White Pike. Runners should note that there is very little water available on the course after passing the Three Shires Stone. Registration takes place at the Newfield Inn, and participants must pre-register as there is no entry available on the day of the event.
