Event Overview
The CPT Drew Russell Warrior Run takes place on Saturday, April 18, 2026. The event honors the memory of Captain Drew Russell, a Western Michigan University ROTC alumnus who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2011. An endowed scholarship for WMU students was established in his memory, and this event raises money for that scholarship to be awarded to a cadet in the program.
Event Format
The event features a single 5K distance with three participation formats:
- 5K Run
- 5K Walk
- 5K Run/Walk (Virtual Race)
The format includes both a "live" in-person race and a virtual option. The live race is held at 2000 W Michigan Ave in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Virtual participants can complete their race anywhere between April 18 and April 25, 2026.
Schedule & Logistics
Packet pickup and same-day registration begin at 7:30 AM. The race begins at 8:30 AM. Awards will be given after the finish. T-shirts are guaranteed for participants who register before March 10th. For in-person participants, shirts are picked up on race day; for virtual participants, shirts are mailed.
Awards
Awards are only for in-person participants. Medals are awarded to winners in each of the following age/gender categories:
- Top Runner Below 25 years old (Male and Female)
- Top Runner between 26 and 40 years old (Male and Female)
- Top Runner above 41 years old (Male and Female)
