Devil's Backbone : Bozeman, MT

The Devil's Backbone is a mountain running event in the Gallatin Crest near Bozeman, Montana. The course runs through the Hyalite–Porcupine–Buffalo Horn Wilderness and follows alpine ridgelines and high-country terrain. The route features significant elevation gain, technical trails, exposed sections, and limited support. Participants are asked to carry food, hydration, navigation tools, and emergency gear due to changing mountain weather and backcountry conditions.

Distances

  • 25-Miler: Point-to-point Portal Creek Trailhead to Grotto Falls via Hyalite Peak.
  • 50-Miler: Out-and-back starting and finishing at Grotto Falls with Portal Creek turnaround.

Entry, donations, and volunteering

The event is presented as a free community event that requests donations. Recommended donations are $90 for the 25-Miler and $150 for the 50-Miler. A non-refundable deposit equal to 50% of the recommended donation is collected at registration to confirm a spot; the remaining balance can be contributed before the event weekend. Donations are distributed equally to local non-profits that support trails, public lands, and the outdoor community. Registration opens Jan 5, 2026.
