Event Overview

The Devil's Backbone is a mountain running event along the Gallatin Crest in the Hyalite–Porcupine–Buffalo Horn Wilderness near Bozeman, Montana. It offers two route options.

Distances

  • 25-Miler: A point-to-point route from Portal Creek Trailhead to Grotto Falls Trailhead, going over Hyalite Peak.
  • 50-Miler: An out-and-back route starting and finishing at Grotto Falls Trailhead, with a turnaround at Portal Creek. This route summits Hyalite Peak in both directions.

Course & Environment

The course is described as remote and rugged, following a demanding route with significant elevation gain and technical terrain. It traverses alpine ridgelines with views of the Gallatin Range. The environment is exposed, with the potential for fast-changing weather conditions.

Participation & Logistics

It is structured as a free community event, with a recommended donation. Donations are distributed to local non-profits supporting trails and public lands. Registration includes a non-refundable deposit. Registration opens on January 5, 2026, and closes on June 30, 2026. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
