Devil's Backbone - Bozeman, MT
The Devil's Backbone is a mountain running event held on July 11, 2026, in the Gallatin Crest near Bozeman, Montana. The event offers two course distances and takes place in the Hyalite–Porcupine–Buffalo Horn Wilderness, with alpine ridgelines and exposed high-country terrain.
The course features significant elevation gain and technical sections. Routes traverse Hyalite Peak and cross remote backcountry terrain where weather can change rapidly. Support on course is limited; participants are expected to be self-sufficient and prepared for mountain conditions.
Participants are asked to carry essential supplies including food, hydration, navigation tools, and emergency gear. The event is community-funded through suggested donations. Recommended donation amounts are $90 for the 25-mile course and $150 for the 50-mile course. A non-refundable deposit equal to 50% of the recommended donation is collected at sign-up, with the remaining balance due before the event weekend. Donations are divided equally and distributed to local non-profits that support trails, public lands, and the outdoor community.
