Devil's Backbone : Bozeman, MT
The Devil's Backbone is a mountain running event on the Gallatin Crest in the Gallatin Mountain Range near Bozeman, MT. It offers two backcountry route options that pass through the Hyalite–Porcupine–Buffalo Horn Wilderness and include sustained climbing, exposed alpine ridgelines, and technical terrain. The course is remote, with limited support and variable mountain weather, so participants must be prepared for self-sufficiency and use sound mountain judgment.
All participants are expected to carry essential supplies such as food, hydration, navigation tools, and emergency gear. The event emphasizes personal responsibility and respect for the terrain and public lands. Routes traverse high country and offer extended sections above tree line with sweeping views of surrounding peaks.
Registration details are provided for the 2026 edition: registration opens on 1/5/2026 and closes Tue, Jun 30 at 11:59 PM MT. The event operates as a community event that requests donations rather than a mandatory fee; recommended donations and deposit rules are specified for each distance. One hundred percent of participant donations are divided equally and distributed to local non-profit organizations that support trails, public lands, and the outdoor community.
