Event overview

The Devil's Backbone is a mountain running event near Bozeman, MT, on the Gallatin Crest of the Gallatin Range. The event offers two distance options and takes place in remote backcountry terrain. Registration opens on January 5, 2026. The event is organized as a community-run effort with volunteer support.

Course and logistics

The route goes into high alpine country and follows exposed ridgelines through the Hyalite–Porcupine–Buffalo Horn Wilderness. The course features significant elevation gain, technical terrain, and limited on-course support. Weather can change quickly in the high country, so participants are expected to carry food, hydration, navigation tools, and emergency gear and to practice self-sufficiency.

Distances

  • 25-Miler: point-to-point, Portal Creek Trailhead to Grotto Falls Trailhead.
  • 50-Miler: out-and-back, start and finish at Grotto Falls Trailhead, turnaround at Portal Creek.

Fees and community support

The event is free to enter but asks participants to contribute a recommended donation. Recommended donations are $90 for the 25-mile option and $150 for the 50-mile option. A non-refundable deposit equal to 50% of the recommended donation is required at registration. All donations are distributed equally to local non-profits that support trails, public lands, and the outdoor community. Volunteering is part of event operations.
