Devil's Backbone
The Devil's Backbone is a mountain running event near Bozeman, MT, held along the Gallatin Crest and the Hyalite–Porcupine–Buffalo Horn Wilderness. The event offers a 25 mile option and a 50 mile option that traverse alpine ridgelines with significant elevation gain and technical terrain. The course is exposed and subject to fast changing weather, and support on course is limited.
Participants are expected to carry essential supplies including food, hydration, navigation tools, and emergency gear. The event emphasizes personal responsibility, mountain experience, and preparedness for backcountry conditions.
The event is organized as a community run with requested donations. Recommended donation amounts are $90 for the 25 mile and $150 for the 50 mile. A non refundable deposit equal to 50 percent of the recommended donation is collected at registration; the remaining balance can be contributed before the event weekend. One hundred percent of donations are divided equally and given to local nonprofits that support trails, public lands, and the outdoor community.
