Event Overview
The Headwaters Relay is a three-day, team-supported adventure race through the backcountry of Montana. The event involves multiple teams, with a total field limited to 26 teams due to Forest Service permits. Preference is given to teams that participated the previous year.
Format and Course
The race consists of individual legs that vary in difficulty and terrain. Leg distances range from 1 to 6 miles. Exchange points are not marked on the course; teams must find them by following written leg descriptions. There are no provided aid stations.
Each day has definitive start and end points. Teams do not run through the night. The overall team time is a compilation of the cumulative time from all completed legs.
Team Structure and Rules
Two team categories are available:
- Ultra Team: For 3 to 5 runners, with a team fee of $1000.
- Standard Team (Full Team): For 6 to 10 runners, with a team fee of $1500.
Each team must have a designated captain and chooses its own name. Teams are fully responsible for their own support, including providing liquids, food, and navigation. A maximum of two support vehicles are allowed per team, with the requirement that one must have high clearance.
Every runner on a team must run a minimum of one leg each day. Teams decide which runner completes each leg, but all designated legs must be completed. Legs must be run in succession by one runner at a time. If a runner cannot finish a leg, another team member must complete it. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
