Montana Backcountry Adventure
The Headwaters Relay is a team-based adventure race held over three days in the backcountry of Montana. The event follows a format where teams are responsible for their own support and navigation, as there are no aid stations along the route. Exchange points are not physically marked; instead, participants find them by following written leg descriptions.
The race consists of multiple legs that vary in difficulty and terrain, with individual leg distances ranging from 1 to 6 miles. Each day has a specific start and end point, and runners do not compete through the night. A team's final ranking is determined by the cumulative time of all sections.
Participation is available in two categories:
- Standard Team: 6-10 runners
- Ultra Team: 3-5 runners
Every team member is required to run at least one leg per day. Teams are responsible for providing their own food, liquids, and navigation. A maximum of two support vehicles is permitted per team, and at least one must be a high-clearance vehicle. Due to Forest Service permits, the field is limited to 26 teams. Teams choose their own name and must appoint a team captain to oversee coordination. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
