The swim takes place in reservoir water. The cycle uses quiet country lanes and the run follows mostly flat paths and trails. Wetsuits are expected to be optional depending on water temperature; they are recommended for comfort and buoyancy, especially for less experienced swimmers.
Transition is a secure, competitors-only area; race and bike numbers must match racking numbers. Competitors must wear helmets and have bike numbers attached before entering transition; bike and bib numbers will be checked before exiting. Live chip timing is provided by Timing Up North. All finishers receive a medal, event merchandise, and a snack and drink. Parking is available at Derwent Waterside Park for a charge and involves a 10–15 minute walk to the event area.
